FLY TYING
Fly of the Month
What do you do when you you have no idea or evidence as to what the fish are eating? That’s when searching nymphs can be your best friend. A good searching nymph can represent multiple possible insects and get you pointed in the right direction. Here is one of Davey McPhail’s favorites.
Hook: Fulling Mill Czech Nymph size 16
Bead: 2.5mm Either Tungsten or Metal Gold Bead
Thread: Fire Orange Uni-8/0
Tail and Thorax Cover: Pheasant Tail Fibers
Rib: Small Gold Tinsel
Body and Thorax: Rabbit Dubbing mixed with Dyed Cinnamon CDC Fibers or just leave it out if you don’t have any as it will still fish well.
Hackle: Dyed Cinnamon and Gray CDC or a Light Ginger Hen

Fly Tying Class
SFF offers a Beginning Fly Tying class. Students will learn to tie five flies that will develop the basic skills that are the foundation for tyers. All tools are provided. Class is limited to six persons to maintain a low teacher-to-student ratio. Stay tuned for when the next class is announced. Contact Mike Hewitt at:
Fly Tying Night
Our next Fly Tying Night will be September 16th! 6:00-9:00 pm. Our drop-in, open fly tying night is held at Food Fix, 938 11th Street, Modesto. This is a non-structured, tie-what-you-want event just to have an opportunity to be among friends and share some flies, lies, ideas, and tips. The monthly tying night is held on the 3rd Monday of each month. New tyers are always welcome and are encouraged to attend.
